When I was eight years old, I first saw a Barbie displayed in a shop window, and was instantly captivated by her style. She appeared fun, bold, elegant, and most importantly, she exuded confidence and flair. That moment sparked a special feeling within, stirring a creative realm I felt compelled to explore.
Life had other plans, so I went on to study finance. But my heart always gravitated toward the creative world of fashion. As I write this, I am grateful to have made a U-turn toward what I truly love.
My biggest design influence comes from the playful yet sophisticated aesthetics of iconic figures like Barbie, who represents not just fashion but the freedom to express individuality. Growing up surrounded by diverse cultures, my designs reflect a rich blend of traditional and contemporary elements. They are deeply influenced by my background and understanding of how culture shapes style. This connection to my heritage and upbringing has deeply guided my approach to fashion, infusing it with both creativity and a strong sense of personal expression.
Creative experiences
My journey in the fashion industry has been both fulfilling and transformative. From the very beginning, I have wanted my designs to do more than just make people look good – I wanted them to feel good as well. My designs aim at empowering individuals, especially women, by celebrating their unique beauty and strength. This philosophy sums up in my brand’s name, “Dakini,” which evokes the spirit of the feminine. My signature style reflects soft, elegant, and feminine designs that highlight grace and fluidity.
What sets my designs apart from others is the deep spiritual connection woven into each piece. For me, fashion isn’t just about aesthetics; it is a form of expression that comes from a place of inner peace and grounding. My creative process is rooted in spirituality, which allows me to stay calm, focused, and continuously inspired. This spiritual approach infuses my designs with a sense of purpose and authenticity that I hope resonates with my clients.
In terms of staying inspired and creative, I find that staying connected to my inner self and the world around me helps me cultivate new ideas. Nature, art, and cultural experiences often spark new designs and concepts.
As for notable achievements, I take pride in having my work showcased at significant fashion events, exhibitions, as well as receiving positive recognition for my commitment to both style and substance. Each milestone is a reminder of how far I’ve come, but I remain driven by my vision to create designs that uplift and empower.
Fashion vision BFW 2025
The collection I’m presenting at this show is called “Metakpa”, which translates to “impermanence” – a concept that symbolises the fleeting nature of life. This collection embodies themes of change, decay, rebirth, transformation, and resilience. The message I want to convey through “Metakpa” is that impermanence is not mourning, but motion. An ode to change, a becoming. Nothing is forever – and that, too, is beautiful.
BFW 2025 marks a historic moment, not only for us designers but for Bhutan as a whole. It’s an opportunity for the country to showcase its immense potential on a global stage. Just like a mystical mountain hidden in the heart of Shangri-La, Bhutan’s fashion future is still waiting to be fully uncovered, and I believe this is just the beginning of something truly remarkable.
Looking ahead, I see the future of fashion in Bhutan as incredibly promising. As we embrace both traditional and modern influences, Bhutan’s unique cultural heritage will undoubtedly inspire innovative designs that blend global trends with local craftsmanship. The world is watching, and I’m excited to see how Bhutan’s fashion scene continues to evolve in the years to come.
