Namstitch

My name is Namsay Dema. I studied a one-year fashion course at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), which gave me the foundation to pursue design. Later, I worked with Madam Kencho for two years as an assistant designer, gaining valuable hands-on experience in tailoring and creative work. Currently, I am with YDFSE (DrukVana), where I continue to explore design and make new products.

My greatest inspiration comes from Bhutanese weavers. Their patience and artistry continually influence my work. Growing up surrounded by textiles showed me how clothing can tell stories and preserve identity. Through Namstitch, I aim to merge traditional weaving techniques with modern design, creating pieces that feel contemporary while carrying the spirit of our heritage.

Creative experiences

My journey in fashion has been one of that is about constant learning. These experiences taught me the balance of creativity, discipline, and cultural storytelling.

My signature style blends Bhutanese handwoven textiles with modern silhouettes, pieces that feel both familiar and new. What sets my work apart is the way I reimagine tradition in designs that are wearable and relevant today.

Some milestones include assisting Madam Kencho in the Khadi–Thai textile presentation with the Indian Embassy (2019) and designing inner garments for “Metamorphosis” (2023), a show inspired by Bhutan’s birds and butterflies. Each step has shaped me as a designer.

Fashion vision BFW 2025

My collection for BFW 2025 is titled “Indigo Bloom.” It tells the story of growth and transformation, expressed through four phases that move from seed to full bloom.

The journey begins with the seed phase, symbolizing quiet beginnings and potential, expressed in simple silhouettes and grounded shades of indigo. The sprouting phase introduces gentle details and soft layers, reflecting the first signs of life and hope. The budding phase brings more structure and vibrancy, showing strength, movement, and the anticipation of beauty. Finally, the full bloom phase celebrates freedom and expression with flowing forms, intricate patterns, and rich variations of indigo that capture nature at its peak.

With Indigo Bloom, I want to tell a story about growth, resilience, and transformation. Just like a seed that slowly sprouts, pushes through the earth, and blossoms into full bloom, this collection reflects the cycles of life we all go through.

It’s about how beauty doesn’t happen all at once- it takes patience, care, and time. Each phase, from the quiet strength of the seed to the vibrance of the bloom, carries its own meaning and value.

Through the language of indigo, a color that feels both timeless and grounding, my message is to celebrate every stage of becoming. I hope this collection reminds people that transformation is not just about the final bloom. It’s about honoring the journey itself.

Through this collection, I want to show how fashion can mirror the cycles of nature, reminding us that every stage, whether small, growing, or flourishing, has its own kind of beauty.

For BFW 2025, my expectation is to share my collection with a wider audience and connect with people who appreciate both creativity and culture. I see it as a platform not only to showcase my work but also to learn from other designers, exchange ideas, and grow as part of Bhutan’s fashion community.

Looking ahead, I believe the future of fashion in Bhutan will continue to evolve in exciting ways. More young designers are beginning to experiment with blending our rich textile traditions with modern styles, and that balance is what makes Bhutanese fashion unique. I see the coming years as a time where sustainability, cultural storytelling, and innovation will come together, allowing our fashion to stay true to its roots while also standing confidently on the global stage.
