Namza
My design influences come from many sources – architects like Tadao Ando, Mies van der Rohe and Geoffrey Bawa, graphic designers like Alexey Brodovitch, fashion designers like Cristobal Balenciaga, Geoffrey Beene, and product designers like Dieter Rams, who elevated simple daily tools like the calculator to an object of beauty.
Rams’ philosophy that “good design is as little design as possible” resonates deeply with me, and his principles – simplicity, honesty, usefulness and restraint – echo in Bhutanese designs. From village homes to textiles to tools, Bhutanese designs are rooted in function and local materials. I hope to carry forward this legacy of honest, thoughtful design.
Creative Experiences
I first studied journalism in New York, where my interest in design deepened through exposure to diverse art forms. Drawn to fashion for its blend of architecture, graphics and craftsmanship, I studied fashion design as a way to merge these disciplines. My signature style is loose, layered and rooted in simple silhouettes, inspired by traditional wraps and weaves.
Fashion vision BFW 2025
The collection for BFW ’25 continues the themes from my last work for RTA, drawing inspiration from traditional clothing – especially monks’ robes. It focuses on simple silhouettes enhanced with fabric manipulation techniques like pleating, draping, embroidery and applique. The collection celebrates our cultural heritage, highlighting the beauty of simplicity, sustainability and timeless design.
